Protected bike lanes make it easier for people of all ages and abilities to safely and confidently ride a bicycle.
Baltimore’s Downtown Bicycle Network will consist of a two-way protected bicycle lane on Maryland Avenue and Cathedral Street, connecting neighborhoods in North and Central Baltimore to downtown. It also includes protected bicycle lanes on Centre, Monument, and Madison Streets, and standard bike lanes on Preston and Biddle Streets, connecting Mount Vernon and Downtown to East Baltimore and the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
Bikemore's advocacy — and the efforts by the residents we've organized around this project — have played a key role in making this a reality. The Maryland Ave Cycle track was stalled for years and our advocacy helped push it forward. Standard bike lanes were originally planned for Monument and Madison Streets, but we pushed for protected bike lanes.
After installation in 2016-2017, Central Baltimore will look a lot more like neighboring cities that make it easy for people to bike to and from work, entertainment, and their homes.
